RADCON, ALARA & Stay Time: The Words Nuclear Workers Wear
Every trade has a language, and the watch's is denser than most. If you've ever stood a boundary or run a survey, these words are second nature. If you're buying for someone who has, here's the glossary — and the gear that wears each one.
RADCON
Radiological Controls. The discipline, the department, and the crest: an orbiting atom around a trefoil core, stamped “Radiological Controls · Groton, Connecticut.” It's the literal origin of RCT Authority and the mark on the house line — the Radiological Controls division, led by the embroidered Classic RCTee.
ALARA
As Low As Reasonably Achievable — the principle that governs every dose decision on site. It's the math behind the badge: minimize time, maximize distance, use shielding. It's also the whole job of the health physics tech, who keeps the numbers down while the work keeps moving.
Stay time & dose
How long you can work in a field before you hit your limit. Dose is the currency; stay time is the budget. Track it, post it, and don't overspend — the unglamorous arithmetic that “Dirty Hands, Clean Money” salutes. It's the creed on the back of the RADCON line.
OnlyNukes
The in-joke. “Only” off the radiation trefoil, “Nukes” trailing behind — the one mark every nuke clocks in a half-second, run in the house amber/magenta or the OG blue read. The OnlyNukes line carries it across tees, hoodies, polos, and a low-profile OnlyNukes hat.
Dolphins
Submarine warfare insignia — gold for officers, silver for enlisted. Earn them and you've earned the boat. The NRMD Submarine Line runs them both, the gold and the silver, alongside the Groton waterfront and the docked-sub yard badge.
Spill Team Six & the rest of the watch humor
The occupational deadpan that only the watch fully gets — hazmat operators in a containment corridor, survey meters, drums, and trefoils. It lives across the radiological controls line, the same place the quiet RADCON stickerhides for the hardcase's laptop.
Why it's embroidered (mostly)
The flagship crests are embroidered — thread, not transfer — so they hold through every wash with no cracking, peeling, or fade. The graphic line runs full-colour direct-to-film for fidelity thread can't reach. Each product page lists the real material, fit, and method, so you know exactly what you're wearing. (Quality, not contamination gear — leave the anti-Cs at the plant.)
